5 Useful And Free Tools For Webmasters Or Internet Marketers

March 25, 2008 | By Kenneth Koh |

Today I’m going to share with you 5 useful and free tools (software) that I use very often when running my online businesses.

1) PDF Creator

If you have been thinking of creating your own PDF ebooks, yet you do not want to buy the expensive Adobe PDF writer, I have a solution.

A free software I’ve been using for a long time is CutePDF. It’s free and very easy to use. Just install and print any page or document into a PDF file.

2) Screen Shot Software

Getting a screen shot of your desktop is very useful when you want to add some useful graphics to your ebook, instruction manual or in your sales letter.

I’ve tried numerous screen shot software but frankly, none of them compares to this free version.

Most screen shot software are complicated and they offer too many features that you don’t need. But
Screen Shot 1.0
gives me exactly what I need. It’s easy to use and it works fast.

3) Multi-purpose Text Editor

This software is not for everyone. But if you are an experienced ‘hands-on’ internet marketer, you will appreciate this software.

Have you ever experienced a situation where you have to change just 1 word in ALL your html files? You open as many windows as possible and try to repeat the change at top speed, only to realize that you still make mistakes along the way.

What if there is a software that allows you to open unlimited number of text files, including your html files, php files etc, and you can replace a word or sentence across all the opened files at the same time?

This is just one of the many advantages of Notepad ++.

With Notepad ++, you can also view 1 file in two different windows. This is very useful for debugging purpose.

Another feature that I like is its color distinction for different syntaxes and codes. If you know a little about html, php or asp, this software can be your best editor.

Basically, if you ever need to perform any text editing, I can’t recommend any editor other than Notepad ++.

4) Audio Editor

Nowadays MP3 recorder is very common. You can easily record your own voice or an interview session. The problem is how are you going to edit the recording?

There are some expensive software out there. Yet again, I’m using a free audio editor that is superbly easy to use, very reliable and it produces top quality audio files.

The audio editor I’m talking about is Audacity.

You can edit most of the popular audio formats with Audacity. But if you need to export the edited file in MP3 format, you will need to install an extra plugin. I suggest if you want to install Audacity, install the MP3 plugin too because you will definitely need it one day. The detailed instruction to install the plugin can be found at

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/manual-1.2/exportmp3.html

5) English Dictionary!

Please, don’t laugh at me. English is not my mother tongue and to make sure that I’m using the right word most of the time when writing a blog or newsletter, I need to use a dictionary.

Online dictionary is too slow and one needs to be online to use it. What I’m using is WordWeb. It’s free and it’s easy to
use.

I have it automatically turn on whenever I start my computer and I set up Ctrl-Z as the hotkey. Whenever I need to check the meaning of a word, all I have to do is highlight the word and press “Ctrl Z”. It’s that simple.

Besides the meaning of the word, WordWeb also gives you the synonyms. Whenever I can’t think of an appropriate word to use, I’ll enter something close and see if I can find a better word in the list of synonyms.

If you have used one of these software or you decide to try them out, share with us your experience in the comment section below. Or if you have a better recommendation, let us know. We are all looking for better software to improve
our efficiency, aren’t we?

Email Marketing Formula, The Beginning - Get Your Emails Read

    Copyright © 2008 Kimberly Clay

Is your email marketing campaign not as effective as you'd like?

Here's what I do for about 90 percent of the email messages I receive: Delete, Delete, Delete... Some days it's so bad, I think my finger's going to get jammed from pressing the "Delete" button so much.

The email messages get deleted for various reasons. Since I now send email marketing messages myself, I try to pay closer attention to emails I receive but don't read, as well as those I do read. I do this in an attempt to discern what compels me to open and read one message versus deleting another either without opening it, or very soon thereafter. The result boils down to this:

The Headline Is Important! The Headline Is Important! The Headline Is Important!

"You had me at "Hello"...Remember that line from the Jerry McGuire movie? If the subject line of your email does not grab your reader by the hair, that reader will most likely delete your message immediately. Period. End of story. Your subject line simply MUST be attention-grabbing.

Now grabbing readers' attention can be accomplished in a variety of ways. You can appeal to their emotions, sense of curiosity, even their greed. However you choose to do it, the result must be the same. You must command the readers' attention and get them interested enough to at least open your message instead of hitting the delete button without another second's consideration.

I could talk about email subject lines all day, because this is such an important part of email marketing, but to make this lesson as brief as possible, let's put it this way:

To be effective, your email subject line needs to be one or a combination of these:

    1. Descriptive – As a reader, I want to know what your email is about before I open your message (see first paragraph above). Using your most relevant keyword(s) within the subject line can be helpful here. For example, if your headline reads "Receive 25% Off Clothes Purchases" my response is likely to be "So," (yawn) and guess what comes next? Delete. But if your subject line reads "Get $25 Cash Back On Your Next Purchase of Elder Berman Jeans", and I'm an Elder Berman customer, I'm clicking that headline!
    1. Compelling - Appeal to me on an emotional or interest level. For instance, here is the subject line of an actual email I recently received: "I Have Found A Great Traffic System". My response? "So?" Delete. There was nothing about the headline that remotely galvanized my attention, much less compelled me to take any action (like actually opening the message). Now, had that message headline read "Discover How To Add 10,000 Visitors To Your Website..." or "Kimberly, Don't Lose Any More Traffic!", I may have been a bit more inclined to open the message and read further.
    1. Purposely Non-Descriptive – In other words, pique my curiosity. This strategy can be a bit tricky. To be effective, you must give the reader just enough information or a "hook" to entice them to seek more, but not so much that they think they know what your message contains, and decide prematurely that they're not interested.

For example, I recently used this email subject line: "You Can Delete This, But What If It's True...". While I'll be the first to admit that I'm no great copywriter, I thought this subject line was effective for two reasons. First, I was able to take the reader a bit "off guard" by telling them to delete the message. In effect, I was predicting the action the reader was likely to take. But then, I added "...But What If It's True". By including this phrase, I hinted that there might be more that they would be interested in knowing; that they might miss out on something if they didn't open the message. In addition, I left them most likely asking themselves what "It" refers to, in essence enticing them to open the email to find out what the "It" in the email message was about.

The bottom line is this, the subject line of your email is the fundamental and all-important key to getting your emails opened and read. Are there other elements of effective email marketing messages? Yes, of course there are. But, if you get this one wrong, none of the others really matter. When your email is immediately deleted, your reader never receives your core message, nor can she/he benefit from your information.

Learn to create great subject lines, and you're well on your way to email marketing success.

    Business Planning Basics

Business planning is an important factor when you are launching your small business startup or online business, and you need to make sure you have documented your ideas thoroughly and objectively for each area. From financial projections to summaries and overviews, an effective business plan will help you and potential investors determine how valuable the business idea truly is.

Most people make the mistake of thinking they don't need a business plan for an online business or startup; they think they can just launch first, and then put the pieces together as they move ahead. However, this can be a costly strategy and puts you at risk for some big mistakes. Business planning will help you organize your goals and keep you on track towards success. Here are some basic do's and don'ts for business planning:

Do write up the business plan summaries before filling out each area. The summary can serve as a basic guide, and can always be changed later if needed. You'll need to write up the general idea of what the section is about so you have a simple outline before getting into the details.

Don't analyze trends too early. While it's a good idea to do some market research and learn about your customers, determining market potential too early on can lead to poor decisions. Effective business planning requires that you find only the information that supports your ideas at this present moment, and then using solid financial projections for forecasting at a later date.

Do outline a marketing budget and plan. Your marketing plan doesn't have to be complex to be effective, and there are many ways you can work on promoting your business and developing a strong customer base. Make a list of at least 5-8 marketing objectives and strategies so that you can coordinate your marketing plan immediately from the startup of your business.

Don't share your business planning strategy or ideas with too many people. You want to make sure that your plans and information remain confidential until you are prepared to launch. Sharing your ideas with too many people can easily make you lose out on a great business opportunity.

Do include sales strategies and marketing tools you want to use. This will help you narrow down which approaches might be most effective for your business as you start out, and you can always build upon them as the business grows. Having these ideas in writing will help you keep track of your objectives with ease.

Don't include your background research or additional ideas within the final plan. Business planning does require some strategic reporting, and you don't have to 'publish' all of your research in the final plans. Take the time to weed out what is most important for you as you get going, and organize the plan as if you were going to be presenting it to a board for review. This will help you filter out what is necessary for the beginning phases of your small business startup, and what can wait for additional review at a later date.

Effective business planning takes time, patience, and strong research and organization skills but the effort is well worth it. Following some business planning basics is all you need to get started, and you can work on building up your plan with ease as the business grows.
